This picture-postcard building is among the Wild Atlantic Way’s most photographed landmarks. It is a functioning lighthouse, but tours are available. It offers panoramic views, taking in North Donegal, Lough Swilly and the North Atlantic. It has been voted one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world.
 
Fanad Lighthouse is known as one of the best places in Ireland to witness the magnificence of the Aurora borealis.
 
Enjoy an unforgettable tour of this famous lighthouse, although be aware that there are restrictions for children. Groups of 15 people and more should book in advance at the ticket office.

The lighthouse visitor centre will allow you to delve in to the history of this fascinating structure which has safely guided vessels since 1812.
 
It was constructed following the loss of HMS Saldanha in the waters of Lough Swilly during the Napoleonic Wars.
 
It was first lit on St Patrick’s Day, 1817 and its fixed light shone red to sea and white to Lough Swilly. It was visible for 14 miles (22 kilometres) in clear weather.
 
In 1975, the Fanad Lighthouse was converted to electric operation and became automated in 1983. Fanad Lighthouse continues to play an important role in maritime safety and is among 70 lighthouses operated by the Commissioners of Irish Lights around the Irish coastline.
